Jill was now fully awake but still couldn’t get the phone call out of her mind. It seemed so real. She got up and decided to go into the kitchen and get another cup of coffee and some toast and since she had the book with her would read some more. Chapter 2. Margaret Elizabeth Morgan or “Maggie” As she was called was 17. She decided on this beautiful spring day in 1857 to collect some wild flowers for the house. She was out on the hill above their house when a very handsome Army Captain on his beautiful sorrel quarter-horse happened upon her. He said as he doffed his hat “ Morning Miss?” “Morgan—Maggie Morgan-- And you are Captain ??” “Maplewood Miss, John Maplewood.” He said in deep rich voice. He went on “I was wondering if you could tell me where Richmond is from here?” “ Oh it is south of here not very far at all.” She said with a smile Captain John Maplewood was smitten. He had to figure out a way to stay a little longer in her company. He then thought and then spoke “I am sorry to bother you Miss Morgan but would you happen to have a drink of water for a tired solider?” He questioned. “Yes I do, follow me.” She walked ahead of him down the little hill to her house. She opened the kitchen door and invited the handsome stranger into the house. While he waited there she went to the well and brought in a pail of water. She then got a glass out of the cupboard and gave him a nice cold glass of water. Just then Maggie’s older sister Hortense came into the room she looked as cold as an iceberg thought the Captain. She told him who she was before Maggie got a chance to introduce them. And said “ I see, well as soon as you are finished I am sure you can be on your way.” She turned abruptly and left the room. Soon Hortense re-entered the room only this time she brought the rest of the family, their parents Dr. Horace and Mrs. Phoebe Morgan and Maggie's rather slothful but charming brother Charles. Maggie introduced them to each other. Mrs. Morgan was very gracious and kind like her younger daughter. In 1857 it was very good for a young man to come for it could mean a marriage for their daughter and he looked like a very good catch indeed. Mrs. Morgan turned to her husband and he nodded then she said to the help. “Could you go to the smoke house and bring back a ham.” Then to the captain she said “ You will join us for dinner won’t you Captain Maplewood?” He agreed he would. This was working out right well thought the captain. Hortense interrupted his thoughts: “Well Captain Maplewood so what brings you out this way.” He replied “ I am on my way to Richmond. Do you know how far that is?” Hortense answered. “It is three miles south of here. I wondered where the rest of your company is Captain Maplewood.” “He responded and said well they are not with me I am on a scouting mission our regular scout was shot so I am taking his place until he is better, so I was out making sure everything was safe. There will be wagons heading this way in a few days and I was going on a head of them . Our next stop will be Richmond.” Jill thought it strange that in the story the family lived about 3 miles North of Richmond. That is odd she thought this house is about 3 miles north of Richmond. Then she thought well likely just a coincidence. Still what if this story isn’t fiction what if it is true? She had found the book in the house and it was clearly old. She thought perhaps the next day she would head for the county’s Registrar of Deeds and see how far back property was registered. Then she thought “ Oh silly me I am getting carried away still this house is about 3 miles North of Richmond and has a lake out the front just like in the story. Jill got up to get another cup of coffee and then her eyes were glued to a young couple dressed in period clothing standing near the refrigerator. Jill caught her breath and turned her head when she turned it back around whatever she had seen was gone. Thank God.. Oh she thought. “My imagination is most certainly working overtime,” Jill thought to herself still she picked up the book with her fresh cup of coffee and headed into a different room. © Copyright April 2011.
