captive orca profiles 80 CALYPSO

CALYPSO Poor Calypso was caught along with 12 others on December 11th 1969, 6 were released and 6 were taken into captivity. 17 days later she was bought by MARINELAND Antibes. Her tank wasn't ready so at the end of a 6000 mile journey she arrived to be held at Cleethorpes England. Her skin was not in a great state as you can see from this old video clip. She remained at Cleethorpes for some months until her tank was ready and then was moved again, to her home in Marineland. She was the first orca to be AI'd but it was not successful, neither was her time in her new tank, she died just a year after her capture. She is another example of how orca's are treated behind the scenes, her trainers did nice smily faces as those of today do, pretending to the public that everything was fine. In just one year, she had been captured and taken from her mother and family, kept in the tiny holding pen, flown 6000 miles arriving at a tank with bits of her skin coming off, where she couldn't even get her dorsal fin under the water, flown on again to France to the swimming size pool in the picture, where almost immediately after her arrival she was being AI'd with who knows sperm as she was the only orca there. What a tragic way to treat such a beautiful mammal so much abuse crammed into a short 1 year of captivity. — at MARINELAND.
