The Old Wooden Swing The old wooden swing that my daddy made for me Was like no other swing as it hung upon the tree. He made oh so sure that it would swing good and steady After he had tethered the hemp rope to it from one side of The tree branch to the other making it safe and ready. He tried the old swing out before he’d let me try. He stood on it and jumped to make sure it was nice and sturdy. And he swung up on that old wooden swing til’ it almost touched the sky. And as I watched my daddy swinging o’ so high I sure did think the sight was mighty pretty. Oh I laughed and giggled and grinned. I jumped up and down and clapped my hands with glee Just waiting for daddy to pronounce “It is done it’s finished for you, that I can see.” With great anticipation I waited for daddy those words to say. And then it happened with a smile of satisfaction upon his face For a job he felt well done. He’d called to me and said “Come here, your swing is now good and safe so you may have some fun.” Upon the swing I then did jump and daddy pushed me high. Oh what a wonderful day that day was Now a memory from day’s gone bye. Oh what joy my daddy gave in his sweet and loving way To his precious little girl on that beautiful crisp fall day. That dear old swing still hangs today from the old tree with great expectation. New hemp rope was added for the next generation. Grandchildren now run and jump and play with glee In that old wooden swing that still hangs from the old cottonwood tree. Sometimes I wander out there now remembering that day long ago. And sit in the swing and twist around and fly high as she’ll go. And then jump out and give a shout And cry out “Oh daddy I miss you so!” by Connie Hull September 20-21, 2010. updated Sept. 3, 2015 I would have to mention the one my dad made he painted it blue and as the poem says it still hangs on the tree today still painted blue.. now for my grandchildren swing on it too. :)
