Il 31 agosto 1997 rimane vittima di un incidente automobilistico sotto il Tunnel de l'Alma a Parigi, insieme al suo compagno Dodi al-Fayed, quando la loro Mercedes guidata dall'autista va a sbattere contro il tredicesimo pilastro della galleria.
