Dies besagt eine Studie, die von der Regierung Indiens unterstützt wird. Die Studie führt die weiterhin große Bedeutung von Unterernährung vor Augen, obwohl das Land in der Zeit von 1990 bis 2005 zur drittgrößten Volkswirtschaft in Asien herangewachsen ist. Laut der Statistik sterben täglich 3000 Kinder an Krankheiten, die auf ihre Unterernährung zurückzuführen sind. Der indische Premierminister Manmohan Singh bezeichnete Unterernährung in Indien daraufhin als „nationale Schande“.
