"The Angel Gabriel came into unto a virgin whose name was Mary and said "Fear Not Mary." And Mary was troubled and cast in her mind what manor of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her "Hail Mary for thou art highly favored and the Lord God is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him she was troubled at his saying and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not Mary: for thou hast fond favor with God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end. 'Then Mary said unto the angel. How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that Holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God, For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:28-38 KJV In this creation the Angel is announcing to Mary that she shall be the mother of the Son of God and shall call His name Jesus. the Holy Ghost is represented by the dove, the red rose in the doves mouth is symbolic of Jesus for his flower is the red rose. The ray of light is symbolic of God the Father. The art of The Holy spirit descending on a beam of light dates back to Medieval period aka Middle ages in art up until and including the present. The Mary and Angel in this are from the renaissance period the foreshortening of the angel's arm was very popular in the renaissance period, his hand pointing up to toward heaven in this one telling Mary her Son is from the most High. The lily is also symbolic of Jesus and His resurrection. Often Annunciation scenes would depict Christ's birth and resurrection using symbolism and His holiness as this scene shows.The Garden is depicting Jesus in the garden foretelling His death and resurrection as well as a heavenly place. The Angel, appears to me, to be earlier than the Mary because by the time the Mary was created there were more shadows and more form to the face which is likely late renaissance to the Baroque period. However I don't know who the artists were of either one of these beautiful creations, they work well together.
