A Farewell To Arms-Ernest Hemingway~This is a young Earnest Hemingway & the nurse he fell in love with in Italy in WWI, Agnes Von Kurowsky. He was wounded in the leg and she was one of the nurses who cared for him. They fell in love and made plans to marry. After he left Italy she wrote him a "Dear John" letter from which friends say he never recovered from. His novel, 'A Farewell To Arms' was based on his wartime experiences in Italy as an ambulance driver with the Red Cross. In the book the character based on Agnes died in childbirth. It was always assumed the nurse in the book was based on a real person, but it wasn't until after his suicide in 1961 that her real identity came out. She said she, "Knew him a little." But when her journal and letters to Hemingway were published after her death in 1991 the real nature of the relationship was finally revealed. His letters to her have never been found. She said a jealous boyfriend made her burn them. I personally think it was an amazing love story and one they both feel they missed out on for the rest of their lives. The Sandra Bullock movie, "In Love & War" is based on their story.
